Where is best to go on holiday in June? Top last minute breaks revealed

Where is best to go on holiday in June? Reigo Eljas, Country Director for lastminute.com, advises travellers to try Venice, Brighton, and Tunisia for a break and great last minute deal.

Brighton

With temperatures set to soar in Britain over the next few months, beach side Brighton is the perfect staycation destination this Summer. A quick and easy 60-minute train ride from London and only 30-minute train from London Gatwick Airport, Brighton is ideal for long weekend breaks, or even a great base for exploring the beautiful Sussex countryside.

What to see and do

From iconic tourist attractions to beach front activities, there’s plenty to do in Brighton no matter the weather. The stunning Royal Pavilion, which houses furniture and works of art including original pieces lent by Her Majesty the Queen is a perfect cultural spot, or take your trip to new heights and go up 450ft in the new British Airways i360 glass pod to see incredible 66 miles of coastline, from the South Downs to the Isle of Wight.

Shopping in Brighton provides an array of choice, from the independent shops of The Lanes, or the more well-known stores located at Brighton Marina, the retail inspiration is endless.

As home to the UK’s biggest pride festival, Brighton’s Pride in the Park is the place to be this August (2nd- 4th), with the likes of Kylie, Clean Bandit, Fleur East and Zak Abel performing this year, so June makes the perfect time of the year to avoid the crowds.

For the country lovers who fancy a daybreak from the hustle and bustle from city life, the South Downs National Park in the Sussex Countryside is a beautiful spot for cycling, hiking and much more.

What to eat

There are countless places to eat in Brighton, with the city being named as the top destination for restaurants and bars by the readers of Condé Nast. The award-winning options are simply endless from healthy beachside, independent restaurants to beautiful fine dining experiences for a romantic evening for two, Brighton caters to everyone.

For the eco-friendly diner, Brighton is home to the zero-waste restaurant, Silo with the production of waste being eliminated by simply choosing to trade directly with farmers, using reusable delivery vessels and choosing local ingredients that themselves generate no waste.

Absolute musts whilst visiting the seaside city are of course the traditional fish and chip shops as well as the sea-front seafood restaurants and ice-cream parlours.

Venice

One of the most culturally enriching and romantic cities in the World, June is the perfect time to visit the beautiful Italian city of Venice before the high season truly kicks in, with some great deals still to be had. The slightly lower temperatures of the beginning of summer makes the wandering through hidden cobbled streets and canal side strolls that much more enchanting.

What to see and do

Be sure to bring your camera to snap to incredible architecture of Venice, from the ancient, gothic Doge’s Palace, to the beautiful Peggy Guggenheim, the home to the world’s most admired modern art collection.

Other classic spots to visit when in Venice are St Mark’s Square, which includes the St Marks’s Basilica and St Marks Campanile, also the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute and the Ca’Rezzonico Museum.

For the more hidden gems, walking over the Grand Canal on the most stunning bridge of Venice, the Rialto Bridge is an absolute must, then continue the stroll through the tucked away cobbled streets to come across some hidden gems.

If entertainment is what you are looking for, then an evening of ballet or live music at the Gran Teatro La Fenice will be an unforgettable experience, or visit Ca’ d’Ora, a Venetian Gothic palace, home to the Franchetti collection of Renaissance art.

A day trip to Murano is a must when in Venice to explore the Museo del Vetro, and to shop for locally crafted glass souvenirs to take home.

What to eat

For anti-pasto and pasta lovers, Venice is the place to head to, especially if you’re not counting the calories. With an abundance of outdoor canal side restaurants, guests can tuck into a delectable dish whilst looking out to the glistening waters, or head through the many streets tucked away to find some lesser known, but equally as delicious restaurants.

Although Venice can sometimes be a little pricey, especially in the main tourist hot spots, there are many options in the city which offer beautiful traditional dishes at a reasonable price, especially if you head to the family run, independent restaurants.

Tunisia

With highs of 31 degrees, Tunisia is the prime sun, sand and sea location to start the summer. As it is the beginning of the season, some fantastic all-inclusive deals are available to ensure everything is taken care of for a relaxing holiday. An abundance of historical sites, from ancient Carthage to the second largest colosseum in the ancient Roman world, Tunisia is full of culture and beautiful sites.

What to see and do

Tunisia boasts more than 1000km of stunning coastline, so a beach day is a great way to spend some of your holiday. If spending your days asleep in the sun isn’t your thing, then the beaches around Tunis are perfect for water sports. From kayaking and paddle boarding to windsurfing and sailing lessons, as well as chartering a yacht to nearby Italian islands.

The mesmerising medina scenes have long served as exotic location shoots to Hollywood directors, and make the perfect spot for meanders in the sunshine.

For the more active and adrenaline seeking holiday goer, camel trekking and four wheeled drive excursions in the Sahara Desert prove extremely popular, as well as hiking in the Kroumirie Mountains.

What to eat

Whilst Tunisia is renowned for its history and culture, Tunis also boasts some of the best restaurants in the Maghreb with an array of delicious dining options.

Head to the sea-fronted terraces at sunset for beautiful food with beautiful views and try the local cuisine of Brik (pronounced breek), a fried Malsouqa dough stuffed with tuna and egg and generally served at Ramadan.

A traditional summer dish to try is Salad Mechouia, comprised mainly of tomatoes and peppers served either mild or hot, a perfect addition for freshly caught grilled fish, the perfect dish served at a coast side restaurant.
